ChatGPT’s rapid growth shows no signs of slowing down, with the popular AI chatbot on track to reach 700 million weekly active users, according to OpenAI.

Nick Turley, OpenAI’s VP and head of ChatGPT’s app, shared the update on X, revealing that the app had previously hit 500 million weekly users by March 2025. He also noted that user growth has quadrupled since last year.

“Every day, people and teams are learning, creating, and solving harder problems. Big week ahead,” Turley wrote, adding his appreciation for the team driving the app’s progress.

ChatGPT’s rising popularity has been fueled by new features like advanced image generation, rolled out in March and powered by the GPT-4 model. According to OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap, over 130 million users generated more than 700 million images shortly after launch.

The app’s business user base is also expanding rapidly. Lightcap recently announced that ChatGPT now has 5 million paying business users, up from 3 million in June.

Analytics firm Sensor Tower reports that users spend an average of 16 minutes per day on ChatGPT, using the app more than 12 days per month, ranking just behind Google and X in user engagement.
