Just two years after launching as a direct competitor to Twitter (now X), Meta’s Threads has surpassed 400 million monthly active users (MAUs), according to Instagram head Adam Mosseri.
“As of a few weeks ago, more than 400 million people are active on Threads every month,” Mosseri shared on Tuesday. “What began as a zany idea to compete with Twitter has evolved into a meaningful platform for open conversation. We’re grateful for the community that’s shaping Threads, and there’s much more to come.”
This milestone reflects an addition of 50 million MAUs in the past quarter alone, following Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s April update that Threads had crossed the 350 million mark.
While X still leads with over 600 million MAUs, Threads is rapidly catching up in mobile engagement. Data from Similarweb shows Threads’ iOS and Android apps reached 115.1 million daily active users in June 2025, a staggering 127.8% year-over-year growth, compared to X’s 132 million, which marks a 15.2% decline.

However, X remains dominant on the web, logging 145.8 million daily visits worldwide in June versus Threads’ 6.9 million.
Threads’ rapid rise has been fueled by a steady rollout of new features over the past year, including direct messaging, fediverse integrations, custom feeds, AI-powered enhancements, and more.
