Elon Musk’s social platform X is facing mounting challenges on Android, with global Google Play downloads plunging 44% year-over-year in July 2025, according to app intelligence firm Appfigures. While iOS installs grew 15% in the same period, the Android slump dragged X’s overall mobile downloads down 26% year-over-year.
The decline follows an even steeper drop in June, when total installs slipped 35% amid a nearly 50% collapse on Android. The Android app’s persistent bugs and crashes are widely cited as pain points for users.
Nikita Bier, X’s recently hired head of product, has acknowledged the problem, announcing the formation of an “Android Dream Team” to rebuild the app. Bier also highlighted record iOS install numbers in July, though these gains pale in comparison to Android losses.
The situation raises questions about where Android users are going. Rival Bluesky has seen modest traction, pulling in just 119,000 downloads in July, while Meta’s Threads continues to close the gap with X in daily active users.

Revenue trends reflect the struggle. In July, X generated $16.9 million in net subscription revenue, down from $18.8 million in March. Analysts suggest some paying users may be defecting to Grok’s standalone AI app, which replicates perks previously tied to X subscriptions.
Despite still relying primarily on ads for revenue, the platform’s falling Android momentum highlights its uphill battle in retaining both users and paying subscribers.
