Google unveiled its Pixel 10 smartphones on Wednesday with a star-studded launch that leaned heavily on paid celebrity appearances, including late-night host Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Curry, Alex Cooper, and the Jonas Brothers. But the event drew backlash online, with viewers criticizing it as cringeworthy and “unwatchable.”

Fallon, who hosted the presentation, struggled to feign excitement about technical features like the phone’s IP68 water-resistance rating, something Google has offered since the Pixel 3. His awkward jokes and exaggerated enthusiasm made the launch feel more like a shopping channel pitch than a major tech showcase, with Reddit users comparing it to QVC.

While Google positioned the Pixel 10 as its most AI-powered smartphone yet, highlighting features like Circle to Search, live translation, and AI photo enhancements, those moments were overshadowed by staged celebrity interactions. Even Fallon’s casual banter with Google execs came across as forced, dumbing down explanations of AI models and sidestepping more substantive details about privacy and performance.

Critics argue Google missed an opportunity to spotlight how it is racing ahead of Apple by embedding AI into everyday smartphone experiences. Instead of showing meaningful real-world use cases, the company leaned on buzzworthy cameos, from Jonas Brothers music clips to influencer-style demos.

Some authentic moments broke through, such as photographer Andre D. Wagner discussing his creative process with the Pixel camera. But overall, the event suggested Google was more interested in hype than substance, a risky choice when its devices already stand out for advancing AI integration.
