When I moved into a new apartment without a television, I didn’t want to crowd my studio with a bulky screen. That’s when Lumi Labs reached out about testing its new Lumi Max projector, and it turned out to be a surprisingly strong TV alternative.
Weighing just over 4 pounds, the Lumi Max is designed for portability and small spaces. It stands vertically, can sit neatly on a shelf, and even comes with a carrying case. With the founders being avid campers, the device was built to slip into a backpack for outdoor movie nights.
The standout feature is its built-in Google TV integration, giving access to 10,000+ apps, 700,000 movies and shows, and 800 free live channels right out of the box. Setup is simple if you already have a Google account, and navigation is smooth via the included remote.
The Lumi Max also includes autofocus and obstacle avoidance, shifting the image around furniture or wall decor automatically. Its projection ranges from 40 to 120 inches in 1080p full HD, with support for 4K UHD input.

Audio is another pleasant surprise: dual 5W speakers with Dolby Audio deliver decent sound, though users can connect external systems for a boost.
At $400, the Lumi Max costs less than many midrange TVs but adds portability and flexibility. Lumi Labs also sells accessories, like a $30 stand and a $20 100-inch screen, and is preparing to launch a “Lumi IQ” mobile app with AI voice controls.
For anyone short on space, or looking for a projector that doubles indoors and outdoors, the Lumi Max is an impressive option that feels more like a modern streaming hub than the clunky projectors of old.
