Rivian is making another round of staff reductions as it prepares for the launch of its more affordable R2 SUV next year.

The EV maker confirmed it has laid off about 150 employees, primarily from its commercial team, which oversees sales and service operations. Affected workers are eligible for rehire and encouraged to apply for other open roles within the company. The layoffs were first reported by The Wall Street Journal and later confirmed by TechCrunch.

This marks Rivian’s second workforce cut in just a few months. In late June, the company eliminated around 1% of its manufacturing team. Over the past two years, Rivian has repeatedly adjusted its headcount, including a 10% reduction in early 2024 and another smaller cut in April of that year.

The company began 2025 with approximately 15,000 employees worldwide, but continues to tighten operations as it focuses resources on bringing the R2 SUV to market.
