Anthropic is finally putting a lid on the nonstop coding marathons happening inside Claude. Starting August 28, the company will begin enforcing weekly usage limits on Claude Code, especially targeting users on the Pro and Max plans who’ve basically turned Claude into a full-time junior dev.
This move follows weeks of confusion, where users suddenly found themselves locked out of Claude Code after just a few hundred prompts. Developers complained that they were hitting a mysterious “usage limit” despite barely scratching the surface. Anthropic had been quietly testing limits without notifying users, which sparked backlash across GitHub and Reddit.
Now, things are official and transparent. According to Anthropic, users will face two types of weekly caps: one for general Claude usage and another specifically for Claude 4 Opus, the company’s most advanced and resource-hungry model. These caps will sit on top of the existing five-hour session reset rule, a policy the company adapted.
If you’re part of the ultra-heavy user club, don’t panic just yet. Users on the Max plan will still be able to go beyond their cap by paying for extra usage, Anthropic clarified. The company claims that fewer than 5% of users will be affected, mostly those reselling accounts, running Claude around the clock, or funneling massive workloads into the system. But for many, the bigger issue wasn’t the cap, it was the radio silence. Users were frustrated by the lack of communication, not just the restrictions.
