Apple is overhauling its App Store age rating system to introduce more specific content labels and align with international standards. The update replaces the previous four-tier age system (4+, 9+, 12+, 17+) with five revised categories: 4+, 9+, 13+, 16+, and 18+ Apple Developer, TechCrunch.
This change is designed to improve clarity for users and parents and to match the guidelines of the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC), a framework used by platforms like Google Play, Xbox, and Nintendo TechCrunch.
As part of the update, Apple has separated the former “Gambling and Contests” warning into two distinct fields. Developers are now required to classify apps under either “Gambling” or “Contests.” Apps that include gambling or simulated gambling will be automatically restricted to users aged 18 and older Apple Developer.
Apple is also introducing optional developer disclosures for content involving alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis. These disclosures will inform Apple’s rating assignments and adjust app availability based on local laws and cultural standards in different regions TechCrunch.
Developers are not required to immediately resubmit existing apps. Apple will automatically apply the updated ratings to apps already on the store. However, new apps and future updates must comply with the revised content and rating guidelines 9to5Mac.
