Bounce, a nonprofit-built tool, is launching Monday to let users migrate accounts between open social networks like Bluesky, Mastodon, and Pixelfed, even though they run on different protocols.

The tool builds on Bridgy Fed, which connects Mastodon and Bluesky, by moving a user’s Bluesky account to a “bridged” profile, then onto Mastodon or Pixelfed. Initially, migration only works from Bluesky to ActivityPub platforms, since Bluesky does not yet support inbound transfers.

However, users should note: once they move off Bluesky, they can’t log back in with their old credentials until Bluesky adds reverse migration.

Bounce arrives at a timely moment. Last week, Bluesky said it would block access in Mississippi to avoid complying with a new age assurance law, underscoring the need for tools that let users take their data elsewhere.

The beta version of Bounce is open now to early adopters, who are encouraged to test the system and provide feedback.
