The Facebook poke is officially making a comeback.

Once a quirky hallmark of Facebook’s early days, the poke feature is being refreshed and promoted to better appeal to younger users. Meta has added a dedicated poke button to user profiles, making it easier to nudge friends with a virtual tap that triggers a notification.

In addition, Facebook now offers a poke-tracking page at facebook.com/pokes, where users can see who poked them, return the gesture, or dismiss pokes they don’t want to reciprocate. Each exchange adds to a running “poke count” between friends, with special icons like fire emojis or “100” appearing as counts climb, a gamified twist designed to mirror streak-style engagement features popular on apps like Snapchat and TikTok.

The revival comes after earlier tweaks in March 2024, when Meta made pokes easier to find via search. Those small changes led to a 13x spike in poking activity in the following month, according to the company.

While Facebook has never defined exactly what a poke means, whether it’s to flirt, annoy, or just say hello, Meta is clearly positioning it as a lightweight, playful way to drive engagement.

The move also underscores Meta’s ongoing challenge: attracting younger users. Despite Facebook’s role as a revenue engine for Meta, its popularity among Gen Z has lagged behind other platforms. Past experiments like Facebook Campus (shut down in 2022) didn’t stick, but by layering gamified elements onto a nostalgic feature, Meta hopes pokes can spark renewed interest.
