Google is rolling out a machine learning-powered system in the U.S. to estimate users’ ages and automatically apply safety filters across services like YouTube, Maps, and the Play Store.

In an effort to better protect minors online, Google is piloting an AI-driven age estimation technology that analyzes user behavior to determine whether someone is under 18. The company says this new system will be integrated across its core products to help enforce age-appropriate content restrictions and digital well-being measures.

Google’s age estimation model draws from signals like Google search behavior, YouTube watch history, and other activity across Google accounts. If the system flags a user as being under 18, they’ll receive an email explaining how their experience with Google products will be modified.

If a user is identified as a minor, Google will automatically:

  • Disable Timeline in Google Maps to reduce location tracking.
  • Turn off personalized ads and restrict age-sensitive ad categories.
  • Block access to adult-themed apps on the Play Store.
  • Activate digital well-being tools on YouTube, such as bedtime reminders and break prompts.
  • Limit exposure to sensitive content, especially material linked to body image concerns or other potentially harmful themes.

These adjustments aim to create a safer, more mindful online environment for younger users. Users who believe they’ve been incorrectly flagged as underage can verify their age by uploading a government-issued ID or a selfie, helping Google adjust their account settings accordingly.

Earlier this week, Google rolled out similar age restriction tools on YouTube, applying AI-based age gating to manage access to mature content. The company said it has previously tested age estimation tools in other global markets (unspecified) with promising results.

“Age assurance helps us ensure that adults can access the information and services they need, while also applying the right protections for our younger users,” Google stated in an official blog post.

Google isn’t alone in adopting AI-powered age verification. Platforms like Instagram and Roblox are also leveraging artificial intelligence to estimate user age and comply with rising legal expectations for online child safety.

In the U.S., multiple states have introduced or passed legislation aimed at enforcing age gating laws. Meanwhile, in the U.K., platforms have started implementing age verification protocols following the passage of the Online Safety Act, which requires tech companies to reduce minors’ exposure to harmful content.
