Google has invested in STAN, an Indian social gaming platform that connects gamers with creators, communities, and publishers, as part of an $8.5 million equity funding round. The round also attracted support from major Japanese gaming companies including Bandai Namco Entertainment, Square Enix, and Reazon Holdings. Other participants included Aptos Labs, King River Capital, and returning investors General Catalyst and GFR Fund. Google joined the round via its AI Futures Fund, which launched in May to back startups leveraging its AI technologies.

STAN, which is headquartered in Singapore but focuses heavily on the Indian gaming market, is positioning itself as a competitor to Discord. However, its approach is more gamified. Users can earn in-app currency, known as “Gems,” by winning popular mobile games such as Battlegrounds Mobile India, Garena Free Fire Max, Minecraft, and Call of Duty, along with more casual games like Ludo and Snakes & Ladders. These Gems can be used to access exclusive creator-led content or redeemed for rewards like e-commerce vouchers from platforms such as Amazon, Flipkart, and PhonePe.

The app also enables creators to launch game-specific chat rooms known as Clubs. While anyone can join these Clubs, accessing premium content within them often requires payment using the in-app currency. STAN takes a commission from these transactions. The company has built a monetization system that encourages participation and daily engagement through features like referral rewards, a spin-to-win wheel, and daily login bonuses.

With over 25 million downloads across Android and iOS, and around 5.5 million monthly active users, STAN is emerging as a social gaming platform to watch. Its growth, fuelled by a blend of community engagement and reward-driven incentives, sets it apart in the increasingly crowded space of digital gaming communities.
