Instagram is experimenting with a new feature called “Picks” designed to help users bond over common interests. The Meta-owned platform confirmed to TechCrunch that Picks is currently an internal prototype and not yet available for public testing.

The feature was first spotted by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi, known for uncovering unreleased app tools. Screenshots shared by Paluzzi show that users can select their favorite movies, TV shows, books, games, and music. Instagram then identifies overlaps with friends who made similar choices, potentially sparking new conversations and connections.

While Instagram hasn’t detailed its rollout plans, the concept aligns with CEO Adam Mosseri’s 2025 vision to focus on creativity, connection, and making content consumption more interactive. “We’re going to double down on messaging, make consuming content more interactive and social, and explore new ways to connect with friends,” Mosseri wrote earlier this year.

Still, the reaction to Picks may be mixed. Instagram has faced criticism for feature bloat, with recent tools like Instagram Map drawing backlash from users who felt they were unnecessary. As with all experimental features, there’s no guarantee Picks will make it to a full release.
