Instagram is testing a Picture-in-Picture feature that lets users watch reels in a small floating window while using other apps, the company confirmed Tuesday.
First spotted by app researcher Radu Oncescu, the feature notifies participants in the test with instructions on how to enable it.
The update could boost retention for longer videos, letting users keep reels playing in the background while texting, browsing, or multitasking. TikTok and YouTube already offer Picture-in-Picture, and Instagram’s move may help creators hold audiences for extended content, ultimately driving more time spent on the app.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri had hinted at the feature months ago in response to user requests. The company is currently testing it with a small group, but it’s unclear when or if the feature will roll out widely.
