Meta is officially pulling the plug on political, electoral, and issue-based ads across the European Union starting October 2025. The move comes in response to the EU’s new Transparency and Targeting of Political Advertising TTPA regulation, which takes full effect on October 10. Meta says the rules, meant to bring more transparency to political ads, are too complex to implement reliably across 27 countries.

The company cited legal uncertainty and operational challenges as key reasons for the decision, noting that the regulation requires platforms to disclose who paid for an ad, how much was spent, who was targeted, and more. Rather than risk violations, Meta is stepping back entirely from selling political ads in the region Reuters.

The announcement mirrors a similar move by Google earlier this year, which also paused political ads in the EU due to concerns over compliance with the upcoming rules Axios.
