OpenAI has acqui-hired the team behind Alex, a Y Combinator-backed tool that integrated AI models into Apple’s Xcode. Founder Daniel Edrisian confirmed in a post on X that the Alex team will join OpenAI’s Codex division, which is developing the company’s AI coding agent.

Launched in 2024, Alex allowed developers to use AI inside Xcode before Apple added its own ChatGPT integration earlier this year. The app will no longer be available for download after October 1, though existing users will continue to receive support without new features.

Alex’s team of three is expected to transition to OpenAI, though it’s unclear if all members are joining. The move follows OpenAI’s growing trend of acqui-hires, including its recent $1.1 billion acquisition of product testing startup Statsig.
