OpenAI has launched a new, lower-cost subscription plan in India called ChatGPT Go, priced at ₹399 per month ($4.60) , a significant drop from the existing ₹1,999 ($23) Plus pla

The new plan, announced Monday, supports UPI payments alongside credit cards, a move aimed at expanding accessibility in India. According to OpenAI VP Nick Turley, ChatGPT Go boosts messages, image generation, and file uploads by 10x over the free tier, while offering improved memory for personalized responses.

“Making ChatGPT more affordable has been a key task from users,” Turley said, noting India is the first market to get the plan before expansion to other regions.

The launch comes as India emerges as OpenAI’s second-largest market, with more than 29 million app downloads in the past 90 days, though revenue from India reached only $3.6 million in the same period, according to Appfigures. OpenAI hopes the localized pricing will drive higher subscription conversions.

Competitors have also ramped up efforts to attract India’s 850+ million internet users. Last month, Perplexity partnered with Airtel to offer free Pro subscriptions, while Google rolled out free AI Pro access for students.

With over 700 million weekly users globally, OpenAI is betting the ChatGPT Go plan will expand its footprint in one of its fastest-growing markets.
