If you have ever felt weird about trusting your two-factor codes to the same Big Tech companies you are trying to keep at arm’s length, hi, Google, Proton has a new app for you.

Today, Proton (yes, the folks behind the privacy-first email and calendar apps) launched Proton Authenticator, a free tool for generating two-factor authentication (2FA) codes. It’s kind of like Google Authenticator… except not owned by Google, and actually private.

The app is now available on iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and Linux, everywhere except your toaster. And in true Proton style, it’s open-source, end-to-end encrypted, and built to work even when you’re offline or off the grid (because privacy nerds love camping).

What Can The Proton Authenticator App Do

  • Generate 2FA codes for logging into services.
  • Sync your codes and accounts across devices, securely.
  • Import your codes from other authenticator apps without rage-quitting.
  • Back them up automatically
  • Work offline, because the internet is not always your friend.
  • Keep Big Tech out of your business.

As Eamonn Maguire, Proton’s Head of Account Security, put it:

“Two-factor authentication is essential for everyone — not just privacy die-hards.”

And he is right. In a world of SIM swap attacks and password dumps, 2FA is not just good hygiene; it is survival.

Proton’s whole pitch here is that security shouldn’t mean inconvenience. You should not have to trade your digital privacy just to protect your Netflix account. With Proton Authenticator, you stay in control of your data, your codes, and your sanity.

Oh, and if you are wondering whether Proton is just bored and launching things for fun: this drop comes just days after they launched Lumo, a privacy-first AI chatbot that does not store your conversations or use your data for training.
