Roblox is rolling out its age-estimation tech to all users by year’s end, requiring video selfies to verify ages for communication features like text and voice chat. The system complements existing ID verification and parental consent checks, helping to better protect under-13 players.
The company is also partnering with the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) to adopt standardized ratings from global agencies like ESRB (U.S.), PEGI (Europe), and USK (Germany). These ratings will replace Roblox’s own maturity labels, giving parents clearer insight into game content around violence, language, gambling, and more.
The updates follow lawsuits alleging Roblox fails to protect kids from predators and inappropriate content, as well as rising global regulations like the U.K. ‘s Online Safety Act. Despite past safety investments, critics say predators still exploit the platform.
