Meta is testing a new feature on Threads that allows users to share long-form text within a single post, the company confirmed to TechCrunch on Thursday.
The new “text attachment” option lets users add a block of styled text to their post instead of creating a thread of multiple posts. According to Threads, the feature is designed for sharing “deeper thoughts, news snippets, book excerpts, and more,” offering creators a streamlined way to post longer content directly on the platform.
The feature was first spotted by app researcher Radu Oncescu on iOS, who shared screenshots online. Threads user Robert P. Nickson also demonstrated the feature, showing how a snippet of the text appears in a gray box within a post, which viewers can tap to expand and scroll through the full content.
The move positions Threads closer to competitor X (formerly Twitter), which offers long-form “Articles” but only to Premium subscribers. Unlike X, Threads’ version is currently free for all users, though that could change as testing evolves. At the moment, Threads only supports text attachments, while X allows images and videos in long-form posts.
Meta says it plans to expand access to more users soon, potentially with added multimedia support.

This update follows a wave of new features Threads has rolled out over the past year, including direct messages, fediverse integrations, custom feeds, and AI-powered enhancements. The platform now boasts over 400 million monthly active users, compared to more than 600 million on X, based on figures previously shared by former CEO Linda Yaccarino.
