WordPress has launched an experimental AI tool called Telex, introduced by co-founder and Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg at WordCamp US 2025.
Telex allows users to generate Gutenberg blocks, the modular elements that power WordPress sites, using text prompts. The tool returns a .zip file that can be installed as a plugin or tested in WordPress Playground. Early testers say the prototype often needs extra work to run smoothly.
Mullenweg described Telex as “a V0 for WordPress,” referencing other prompt-based coding platforms, and said AI aligns with WordPress’s mission of making publishing more accessible. Alongside Telex, he showed off a simple AI-powered help assistant built in just a few hours.

Despite acknowledging concerns around AI hype, Mullenweg called the moment “incredibly exciting” for democratized publishing.
The announcement comes as Automattic continues a legal battle with WP Engine over trademark use, which Mullenweg said is still moving through the courts.
