X is rolling out wider access to its encrypted messaging feature, XChat, first introduced in beta back in May.
Unlike the regular DM inbox, XChat is end-to-end encrypted and offers features like group chats, media uploads, pinned messages, and read/unread controls. A vanishing mode is also reportedly in development.
Users must opt in to use XChat and set a four-digit passcode before chatting with others who have also joined. On desktop, the feature is available under the messages tab, while on mobile it appears in the main navigation bar above Communities.

For now, XChat does not replace standard DMs, which remain accessible under an “unencrypted” tab.
